Hike’s Dictionary: Happen

May 4, 2011 § Leave a comment

Hap-pen

– (noun) a problem; distraction; something out of place

 – (pronoun) a puzzlement

“Happen” has become a surprisingly versatile addition to Hiram’s vocabulary. He can use it to tattle on himself or, when inflected upwards, as a question word.

Happen.

Used when Hiram notices milk has spilled on the floor or the box of books has mysteriously tipped over.

 Happen?

Used when Hiram wonders what we’re going to do about the frost on our car windows or the rice pot boiling over.
