What Hike Likes: Brussel Sprouts

We have a “no thank you bite” policy at our house and the rules are as follows:
- Hiram has to take one small bite of everything we have at dinner
- If he really doesn’t like it, he’s allowed to spit it out
I credit this policy as a key reason Hiram is such a good eater. But I also credit Hiram for not being too proud. Unlike even some adults (like me…beets), Hiram approaches eating with a refreshingly open mind. About fifty percent of the time, even a strongly-resisted no-thank-you bite yields the discovery that Hiram likes what he tried. Sometimes, like last night, this surprises even us.
When I dropped the Brussel Sprout onto his plate, Hiram was violently opposed. But after Brad pointed out that each one had a head and a tail, Hiram started popping them in his mouth and announcing, “I ate the head AND the tail!” In fact, by the end of the meal, Hiram was reduced to tears when he realized that Brad had polished off the very last one.
