Farm Report – August Week 4

August 29, 2015 § Leave a comment

Oh man, there’s so much I can’t wait to do differently with my square foot garden next year. Most importantly, I am never, ever going to grow squash again. It’s way too big.  I don’t even like squash that much.  And, as I read somewhere, squash is a “greedy feeder.” You got that right.

But the mystery is solved and I know they are acorns. And that they are pretty. I will now document them because these two (plus whatever else is going out there on that plant– I wouldn’t know because I can’t get anywhere near its middle, it’s so big), is the only squash I will ever, ever produce. At least until they put me out to pasture and I have all the space/time I need to accommodate these bossy things.

First Day Recap

Three little words any mom wants to hear after a first day of school: Today. Was. Awesome.

I was on the hearing-end of this utterance yesterday afternoon. In fact. These were the first three words I heard after picking Hiram up from school. All night he was happy, chatty and confident. He didn’t even seem too tired.

It seems like his favorite thing about yesterday was STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) class, which he starts now because he’s a first grader. He was also impressed with his new lunchbox because it kept the “freezer” frozen all day long. I am counting the minutes until tonight when I can find out what he thought of day 2. Let’s hope this happiness continues on and on.

First Day of First Grade

Hiram started first grade today!

I must say, the first day of first grade was a heck-uv-a-lot easier (on me) than the first day of kindergarten. I slept like a baby last night and then this morning, when Hiram was nervous, I could act like an actual mother and give him a pep talk. Unlike last year when every time he looked at me I started sobbing.

Today, we walked right into his classroom, got him settled and I bolted. He had a project, a few friends and didn’t seem to need me. The pep talk must have worked.

Take It Away…

Here are two videos we made of H and E trying out the trombone for the first time.  We made them specifically with Grandma and Grandpa Barrows in mind. But really, I’m not sure I can think of anyone who wouldn’t want to see this.

Happy Friday.

Go Saints!

With just a few short days before the end of Hiram’s summer break, we’re cramming it in. Today, it was a rainy but very fun first Saints baseball game. Aunt Linda came along to help us make it into a party.

The boys had been eagerly awaiting this day all week. Hiram was so excited he almost couldn’t decide what to wear. When it was over, I asked Hiram if it was all that he imagined and he said “yes.” Although I also asked him these other two questions and his answers make me feel a little sad.

What were you most looking forward to about the game?

Catching a baseball.

What was your favorite part?

I don’t know. Eating?

Here are a few pics. Proof Hiram still had fun even though he didn’t catch a baseball. This time.

Budding Wake Boarders

When we heard the forecast for the weekend, we decided to make a getaway up north. While I was lounging around, catching up on my books, the boys in the family were busy learning how to do this. And this.

Too bad I didn’t have this set of videos for #BradWeek. These two kiddos have one awesome daddy.

Eldyn: 3 Years + 8 Months

New Buddy: Sometimes Lew likes to meet me at the end of my morning run for a victory lap around the block. Last week when I stopped to pick him up, he was tenderly holding a cute little…slug. I suggested we leave the slug in the yard but Eldyn refused. “No!” he said. “This is my buddy.” And so, we brought him along. Unfortunately (for the slug) we dropped him on the sidewalk after just the first turn. Fortunately (for me) we only had to search for a minute or two before I was able to convince Lew we would be able to find him a new buddy.

Watch This: If watching this kid sing in front of church isn’t enough to convince you he loves attention, just take him to a park to play. “Mom! Watch this!” “Look at me!” “Mom! Mom! Mommmmm! Watch.” I’m taking a tip from the pages of his own dictionary when I say that usually, whatever it is he has to show us is…interesting.

Undies in a Bunch: Eldyn does a lot of his own dressing and almost always remembers to put on his underwear! The thing I can’t understand is how he doesn’t notice or mind when his shorts look like this. (He just does not care.)
